Bursaries

At St Albans School, we believe that talent, character and ambition - not financial circumstance - should shape a child’s educational journey. For many families, the cost of an independent education can feel like a barrier. But with philanthropic support from parents and alumni, it doesn’t have to be.

Our bursary programme ensures that bright, motivated children can access an exceptional education, regardless of their financial background. A bursary can genuinely transform a young person’s life: opening doors, building confidence and helping them discover what they are truly capable of.

The impact of your giving

Your support directly changes lives. When you give to bursaries, you make it possible for children to:

  • Access opportunity - Join a school where they can thrive academically and personally.
  • Build confidence - Discover new strengths, ambitions and pathways.
  • Participate fully - Take part in trips, sport, music, drama and enrichment.
  • Shape their future - Benefit from an education that broadens horizons and raises aspirations.

Your philanthropy also enriches the School itself. Pupils joining from different backgrounds bring new perspectives, experiences and ideas - creating a more vibrant, diverse and dynamic learning community.

A programme built on care and belonging

Supporting bursaries is about more than funding a place. It is about supporting a child’s full journey.

Families receive personalised guidance throughout the application process, helping them understand eligibility, assessments and next steps. Once a child joins the School, ongoing pastoral advocacy ensures they feel a sense of belonging and can access everything St Albans School has to offer - in the classroom, on the sports field, on stage and in everyday school life.

Every pupil contributes to the warm, caring and inclusive atmosphere that defines St Albans School. Your support helps ensure bursary pupils feel that same sense of welcome from their very first day.

And it's not just the bursary award holder that benefits, but also their communities, families, and networks they go on to create.

One of our strategic aims is to broaden access to St Albans School — and philanthropy is essential to achieving it. Many families simply do not know that bursaries exist or assume an independent school is out of reach. Your generosity helps us reach these families, offer life‑changing opportunities and build a school community strengthened by diversity of experience.

If you believe in the power of education to transform futures, we invite you to support our bursary programme. Your gift - whether one‑off, regular or part of a legacy - will make a difference.

Together, we can ensure that ability and ambition, not financial circumstance, shape a young person’s future.
